We are always excited about meeting new patients during their first visit to our office.
At your initial appointment you will need to complete our standard office forms if you haven’t received or completed the on-line forms in advance. You will expedite your intial visit if you download and complete these forms in advance; therefore saving yourself time and giving yourself adequate time to look up the answer to any of questions (e.g. medications or last dental visit).
Upon your arrival one of our friendly staff will greet you and assist you with signing into our office intranet and answer any questions you may have. If you have insurance coverage, we will need to make a copy of your insurance card, so be sure to bring your card and any other necessary information. Please remember, that all patients under the age of 18, except emancipated minors, must have a parent present with them. If a parent is unable to accompany the patient any of the following may be present if they have written consent or legal papers (e.g. court documents) from a parent. These may be a step-parent, non-custodial parent, sibling 18 or older, legal guardian, foster parent, or grandparent.
During your initial examination, Dr. Wood will evaluate your bite and discuss potential treatment options. This important visit may last up to 30 minutes, and give you important information about what orthodontics can possibly do for you. It also allows Dr. Wood and our staff the opportunity to answer any questions you may have.
We know your time is valuable, so you may combine the initial exam and diagnostic records into one visit or schedule the records for another day. These records include a 3-D imaging x-ray scan, photographs and impressions for study models, which are necessary for developing the appropriate treatment plan for you. This additional appointment time will last approximately 45 minutes.
While we can answer general questions about treatment during the initial examination, we will address specific areas after careful analysis of your diagnostic records. We feel it is important to analyze each patient's specific needs, because in-depth planning leads to superior results and higher patient satisfaction. We will then schedule a consultation visit to discuss treatment options, time frames, financial arrangements, and then we are ready to get started with your treatment.
Our goal is that each patient leaves our office after their first visit with a clear understanding of their specific needs, what the treatment will consist of, how long it will take, and what payment options are available. Always feel free to contact us if there are any questions between visits.
Some of the more common questions we are asked;
What do I need to bring to my first visit?
For your first visit you’ll need to bring the completed office forms that were either downloaded from our on-line office or received in the mail. Also, if you have a Panorex film from your regular dentist within the past 12 months that will be beneficial for Dr. Wood in evaluating what is going on underneath the gums. If you would like us to file with your insurance company then please bring your insurance card with you.
Can orthodontics address my condition?
Orthodontics can improve and correct a wide variety of bite problems that may or may not be associated with other dental problems.
When should I start treatment?
Every patient is different and multiple variables determine the best starting time for each patient. Sometimes intercepting growth plays a significant role; and other times, the problem is strictly dental related and growth isn’t a factor. Dr. Wood will inform you if the time is right. If not, we will monitor you until it is. It is important to know that we cannot start treatment unless you have had a recent check-up and cleaning with your regular dentist, and you have healthy gums and teeth.
What appointment times are available?
We offer a variety of appointment times in order to accommodate our patients work and school schedules. By offering shorter appointments in the early morning and after school we can accommodate more patients. Our longer appointments are during the morning and early afternoon. Please refer to our office information for our most current hours.
What treatment procedures will be used to correct the problem?
There is no one treatment that is for everybody. Every patient is unique in their own way and so are the treatment plans. However, we do offer the most current technology available. Be sure to ask us.
Do any permanent teeth need to be removed?
This is a concern of many patients. Sometimes it is very obvious and other times it isn’t. Dr. Wood understands these concerns and does not readily recommend the removal of permanent teeth without you fully understanding the reason. If applicable, we may offer non-extraction alternatives.
How long will treatment take?
Everybody’s overall treatment time varies; however, the average treatment time for teenagers is 20-24 months and adults 28-30 months. We do offer various appliances and technology to shorten your treatment time, which may be available at an additional cost.
How much will it cost?
A very common question. Your fee will be determined by the complexity of your case and the length of treatment.
What are my payment options?
We have various payment options to accommodate the various budgets of our patients. We offer in-office payment plans that carry no interest, no down payments, and down payments with monthly payments, or third-party options that allow you carry the balance longer.
Do braces hurt?
The braces themselves do not hurt; however, after each adjustment your teeth may be sore for a day or two. The level of soreness varies from patient to patient and whatever you normally take for body aches is usually adequate enough to make you comfortable.
